Location

The first coding decision is to which part of the blot the response referred. Use the Location Sheet, outlined at test administration, to obtain the correct location code.

The response may include the entire blot or only a portion of it. When the former occurs, it is a Whole response. In the latter, it is a Detail response, and the symbol used in coding the location will depend on whether the area selected is one that is commonly used. Whenever the white space is included in the response, the symbol S is added as a second code to the location code.

The 4 symbols used in the location coding and the criterion for each are shown in the table below.

W All the portions of the entire blot are used. (The entire blot must be used.)
D A frequently identified area of the blot.
Dd An infrequently identified area.
S A white space area is used in the response (WS, DS, DdS).

In the RAP coding and reporting application, the Cards Location & Form Quality Table provides links to figures that are showing the location numbering for each of the 10 cards. The numbered areas in the card figures have been identified based on the frequency of use of a large normative sample.

Examples:

"The whole thing looks like..." = W
"If I use only this upper part it could be..." = D

If the area used in the response is not included in the Cards Location & Form Quality table, the coding will always be Dd.

In Case of Multiple Locations Response:
If any distinct object is using an unusual location (aka, Dd), give Dd.

In case all the areas are Ds:
•  If the combined D areas are using to identify separate objects = D.
Example: III - Person (D9) working on pottery (D7).

• When D areas combined uncommonly to form one object = Dd.
Example: III - Person (D9) with a grotesque hand (D7).

S
White space can be used in one of two ways. The response may integrate the white space with other blot areas, or it includes only a white space area. In either case, the S is never used alone as a location code. Instead, it is always used with another location symbol, as in WS, DS, DdS.

Examples:
II - "The whole thing is a face" ["the red would be the eyes, the cheeks here (black) and the white area would be the mouth"] = WS
II - "A spaceship" ["The white (DS5) is the spaceship"]= DS
IX - "Like a little face staring out through a window" ["A little face, the white is the eyes peeking out and these parts look like nose and mouth"] = DdS
